This edited volume is the result of the interdisciplinary symposium 'Digital Objects, Digital Subjects: Activism, Research & Critique in the Age of Big Data Capitalism' that took place on May 20-21, 2017 at the University of Westminster. In this contribution, the editors introduce the book’s theoretical and political context. They discuss how scholarly literature argues that subjects and objects have changed in the wake of digitalisation and big data. The editors introduce the notion of Big Data capitalism, which signifies emergent properties of contemporary capitalism.
